•Accommodation:
~For hostels:
-Booking.com
-Hostel world
Note: always book on hostel’s actual website for cheapest prices!
~Couchsurfing: an app, you also have to pay to join. You can stay with people for free here, I prefer to stay with women. Make sure to make personalized pitches to people. Expect to pitch to 10-20 women to get a place. Men will always offer lol, I’d bring a buddy for that. Expect to hang out with the person, this is a cultural exchange first and foremost.
•Work Exchanges:
-Workaway: costs money to join, but has more hosts than world packers. You work around $25 a week for a room and sometimes meals are included. Often you’re bunking up. Make sure you check reviews. You can nanny, work on a farm, work at hostels, etc.
-World Packers: costs $40 a year. Good way to meet fellow travelers as well. Good for eco farm work and seasonal jobs. Also a way to find stays cooking, cleaning, painting, farming etc.
-Trusted House sitters: Animal sit for people for free in exchange for staying at their house. You will find the most work during holidays unfortunately. Lots of rural jobs if you’re looking to escape to the country.
Note: It is harder to find work exchange in winter
•Travel:
-FlixBus: cheapest way to get around Europe. Always check if there’s a FlixBus to get between cities.
-Flights: use kayak and click your location and for destination select anywhere and adjust the flights to be within a few days of your expected leave time. A map will come up with all the places you could fly to. Also, a list will come up with the cheapest flights from that location.
•Entertainment:
-AI: I often use Snapchat AI to plan iteneraries for me or to list 20 free things to do in a city so I can have a bunch of options of what to do. If you’re in a country for a week, this is nice because you can ask it to plan the trip for you and even tell it your arrivals times and have it make the itenerary divided by morning, afternoon, and evening.
-Botanical gardens: this is my favorite thing to do in a city and it’s usually free
-get your guide: tours in each city
-GuruWalks: walking tours in each city. Look up free ones too.
Spending by Country:
Scotland:
I spent about £70 per day. You could probably swing £50 if you’re cheap. I reccomend going to the stand comedy club. It’s incredible with shows from 8-15£. Hostels are about £23 per night if you have 9 in a room at the cheapest places. Same in Glasgow. Inverness is more expensive with around £33 per night, but they have meal deals at the dollar store at £3 pounds for a sandwhich, snack, and drink. In Edinburgh the meal deal in the grocery store’s £5. Look for those in grocery stores to save money.
Holland- Amsterdam:
Hostels are €15-25 a night. Definitely having a lot of people in a room. I’d typically spend €50 a day, unless you budget. If There’s less meal deals. Expect to spend a lot more each day. Cook or meal prep when you can. Meals are expensive around €10-20 at a restaurant. You can get pizza by the slice around €4. Snack bars are a great way to save money and eat junk food, but you still will spend around 6-10€. But everything at the grocery store!
Additional Tips:
-Travel during the night to avoid paying for accommodation that day
